| The Portal Heritage Society, Inc., was founded in 1981 by a group of citizens in Portal, Georgia. The mission is to preserve the complete history of the Portal community/region by honoring the traditions and heritage of a bygone era. They are fortunate to have two local historical sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Preserving the restoration of historic structure, exhibition of historical artifacts and life style, which focus on the Stewart House, Stewart Office/Drug Company, Turpentine Still and Museum The museum houses artifacts of turpentine processing. The Society is dedicated to the preservation, documentation, publication, collection, display of items of historical interest, and restoration of skills. Over the years they have been involved in many projects to raise awareness of Portal history and cultural heritage. The Society also spearheads fund-raising activities to help restore the buildings and arrest any further deterioration to the historic site. The Dr. James A. Stewart home and Stewart Drug Company were building in 1908. Anther historic structure is the Carter Turpentine Still. Operations began in the 1930's and continued until the 1960's, then sadly, for nearly 20 years the still was cold and silent. Then 1982 the Heritage Society, restored the still, making it the only known operating still on its original site in the US. The historic site is open to the public by special appointment and during community events. For appointments to visit, contact Jerry Lanigan (912) 865-2810 or any member. |
