| Upon graduation from the Medical College of Georgia in 1906, Doctor James A. Stewart moved to Bulloch County, having heard there was a need for rural doctor in this area. Stewart purchased a lot in 1908 for his office/drug store in the business area. The Stewart Drug Company Historic site has been left as if "Doc" just stepped out for a minute to pay a house call. As you walk in noticing early 20th century surgical tools, equipment, apothecary item, medical journals and records. Stewart medical skills were most needed for the birthing of babies and Saturday night brawls. With it's marble soda fountain, which was installed in 1910, became a popular meeting place for both gossip and ice-cream sodas. The hand-crank telephone is still on the wall. Rows of neatly stacked old-fashioned medicine bottles adorn the shelves, some still half-filled with pills. Medical books which describe their uses are in the restored office/pharmacy. Records show he was first at, many things: an automobile in Portal, 1913 (the garage is still standing), an crank telephones installed at his home and his office, 1915, which was connected by a relay switch that allowed him to call home from his office, and to have electric lights in a residence from the Delco generator, 1919. "City" water became available at the soda fountain in 1921, although Stewart relied on his own water pump at his home until the end of World War II. The building and its artifact are a tribute to the history and tradition Portal. |
