AN ANTIQUE TRACTOR
There just can't be a parade
without an John Deere.
The beginning of the turpentine industry is this area stated by F. N. Carter
and his son E.C. Carter, they operated the still commercially from 1930's
continued until 1960's. For nearly 20 years the Carter Still was cold and silent.
While many of the old stills from that period were sold for the copper tubing
and iron boilers, only the Carter Still remained as it was and it's origin site.

In 1982, Denver Hollingsworth along with Portal Heritage Society had the
idea to restore the old still. So it was restored and once again fired-up the old
boiler. Now it's one of three remaining working still in the states of Georgia.
One in Tifton and in Walthourville. The turpentine processing, where pine
tar and gum pine is "cooked down" to make turpentine. Even potatoes boiled
in pine rosin are surprisingly soft, fluffy and delicious.

Catface Country named for the slash marks, resembling cat's whiskers,
turpentine harvesters made on pine trees. Each year in the fall, the Portal
Heritage Society, Inc. host a Catface Turpentine Festival that celebrates the
making of turpentine at the historic E.C. Carter Still, located in the heart of
Portal. Folks come from near and far to learn about the families and its
lifestyles that once inhabited this historic still. See the demonstrate of how the
old still works. In addition to the turpentine cooking the event is kicked off
with a parade, along with entertainment, dancing, food, arts, and crafts. Some
even come just to purchase the bottles and jars of turpentine, with bits and
pieces of resin that the still refined.

All proceeds from the festival are put back into the community.
